Time to exfoliate!

When to exfoliate?

If you love wearing makeup on a daily basis, this procedure is a must! Exfoliating lifts up remaining makeup particles and dead skin cells allowing other skincare products to penetrate onto skin. This could be done in the morning or evening, whichever you guys prefer. I usually exfoliate once in 2 weeks.

So I tested this Black Sugar Mask by the brand Skinfood. Got this as a sample size on my September IPSY Glambag. The full size 3.38 oz / 100 ml. Sold at $10 from Ulta.

Skinfood’s Black Sugar Mask

SKINFOOD’ s Black Sugar Cleansing skin care line is an exfoliating and moisturizing cleansing line with organic black sugar. Black sugar is enriched with vitamins and minerals to hydrate and nourish skin. Dead skin cells are scrubbed away, leaving skin soft and glowing.

The black sugar sourced by SKINFOOD is not actually black, but a dark brown sugar. The brown color derives from the amount of molasses, a syrup separated out from sugar after the refining process. While most commercial brown sugar is just refined white sugar coated with molasses, black sugar is unrefined, leaving behind more of the natural benefits. Enriched with vitamins and minerals and organically farmed without pesticides, it’ s sweet to the taste and to the touch! –Skinfood.com

Product Details:

This exfoliating scrub smells heavenly of brown sugar and leaves your skin feeling porcelain smooth and soft. The sugar grains make for an excellent manual exfoliator and dissolve slowly as you massage them gently on your face. The hydrating formula moisturizes your face as it sets and after rinsing off, your skin is totally glowing and baby-soft. –Soko Glam

Skinfood's Black Sugar Mask Review

Overall thoughts:

Okay, it was sugar alright! The mask pack had itsy bitsy grains of sugar molded into a black paste. I’m guessing that was melted sugar too. It was not really black but brown sugar as described. I was about to taste it, but again it contained Butylparaben. Just from the word itself, it had paraben, a known  cosmetic preservative. So it’s not really “all natural” in ingredients and definitely not edible. The scent was very sweet and raw like “muscavados” a natural brown sugar. It contained caramel as listed in the ingredients which was so tempting to taste. As you can see from the image above, only a pea size amount was enough to exfoliate my dead skin cells. It also melted away as I kept rubbing the mask pack onto my face. Also, it doubled as a lip exfoliator! The granules where rough like sugar. I felt it melting away as it gently exfoliated my skin.

After rubbing this mask in less than a minute. Rinsed it off with lukewarm water, patted it dry and immediately felt so soft and smooth. It did irritate my skin a bit causing it to look inflammed.  So I don’t recommend exfoliating on an inflammed skin. I did try it on my elbows just and it worked too! Of course the traditional sugar and honey mask pack would be a cheap substitute for this. But there’s something about it that makes my skin so soft after using it. Followed it up with a lightweight moisturizer. Overall I loved it! I couldn’t say that this item would be rated because technically it was almost free from the ipsy bag but for review purposes, here’s my rating:

Effectiveness🍑 I felt it rubbing away all my dead skin cells. The sugar granules were a bit rough though, it also made my skin a little irritated.

Packaging🍑 Very cute!

Price-$10 for a scrub? Not really in my price range considering the fact that I honestly use and a facial scrub just once a week.

Availability🍑 Sold at your nearest Ulta.

Score interpretation:

🍑🍑🍑-Good enough to try.  Would repurchase it if was on sale. Won’t recommend it if you guys have sensitive skin like I have. A store bought brown sugar and honey mixed together would be a cheap alternative for this mask.  I prefer the scrubs to be “super fine” in texture to prevent micro-tearing on my skin.  For me, that would be less “harsh-er” especially to my face. I have to admit that after exfoliating with this product, my skin felt so soft and smooth. So that’s one take away from this black sugar mask experience.
Have you guys exfoliated your skin lately? Until the next review!

Does it really contain GOLD?

Pure Smile Essence Mask Series. This particular one is the Gold Essence Mask. Purchased at Althea korea for $1.10(shipping fee not included). They had several other types of mask but this one really got my attention. I was so intrigued by the gold essence in it. But does it really contain gold?

Containing ceramide, collagen, hyaluronic acid, arbutin, and silk extract, it gives skin moisture for a smooth texture. The main focus of the mask was it’s anti wrinkle properties. Pure Smile manufacture masks from Korea yet the company is based in Japan. The producweighs 23 ml. The Gold component of the mask was called “colloidal gold” (noted on ingredients) also known to heal micro damage, making it an ideal skincare ingredient for those with sensitive, sun damaged and acne scarred skin.  Indicated for all skintypes.

Gold: Water, Glycerin, PEG/PPG-17/6 Copolymer,  Hydrolyzed Collagen, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Xanthan Gum, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Erythritol, Natto Gum, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, PEG-14M, Sodium Hyaluronate, Disodium EDTA, Methylparaben, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Allantoin, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Arbutin, Ceramide 3, Tocopheryl Acetate, Colloidal Gold

How I used it:

After cleansing my face with my oldie but goodie cetaphil facial cleanser, toned my face with the Rire Pore Tightening Tore (review already posted) then placed on the mask for 20 minutes as instructed the patted on the remaining essence. Used this mask during my night skincare routine because if I use it during the day, I know a 100% my face would oil up.

My skin type:

Oily to combination skin and sensitive. My skin gets really oily along my T-zone and dry around my cheeks and sometimes on the sides of my nose especially during cold seasons.

The mask had soft fiber type of mask. It was soaked in jelly like essence that was clear and scented. I didn’t really recognize the scent of it. I just noted that it smelled like perfume. The essence dried up a little faster once exposed to air. It did not have a lot of extra essence to squeeze out and that was fine because the mask was really soaked. I did notice the essence drying up a little quicker as compared to other moisturizing mask. There were no irritations noted during and after using the mask and the fitting of it was just enough. My skin after the mask was soft and plumped up a bit. For the healing claims, I had a bump on my cheek area, I thought the mask would decrease it’s size but after using the mask it was still elevated but the redness disappeared. So it worked a bit on that. I waited for the essence to dry and was expecting it to leave a tacky finish but it didn’t!  Overall I liked how it moisturized and made my skin more supple and decreased my inflammations just a little bit.

Rating: 🍑🍑🍑🍑/5

for the following:

Effectiveness:🍑 It made my skin soft, supple and smooth. It also reduced the redness on some inflammed areas. A plus for the anti wrinkle and partly for the healing claims. The morning after using this mask, my skin was still soft.

Packaging:🍑 It was alright just hoping that it had English interpretations. It had a catchy yellow to gold color in the packaging making the ingredient more evident.

Price:🍑🍑 Very affordable for the price of $1.10

Availability: Apparently it was only available online.

Score interpretations:

🍑🍑🍑🍑-Great.The product was effective. Will recommend it. It was fun to try out a Gold mask essence. I was hoping to see gold particles but there were none. Overall the mask reduced redness on areas of my face, made my skin soft and plump and lastly the essence was so quick to dry plus it was not sticky after. I would recommend this for oily skin types like me.
