Going Natural in Deodorants

Hello guys! 4th of July is nearly coming so I just want to wish you all a great vacation ahead! Today’s post is about a new segment of my “Eye See Tries It” topics. Now, I am so excited to try Natural Deodorants! I’ve heard so much about this in decreasing body odor and I’m hoping that this would work for me. By the way I wanna say thank you for all those who check my page once in a while. I created Eye See Something May 14 of this year and I’m really glad to hit over 3,000 views! Thank you so much for this! I am motivated to give you guys unbiased and unfiltered reviews so keep posted. Anyway, let’s move on to this review.

Now I know that some deodorants are not antiperspirants. Basically most armpit deodorants I purchased through out the years had antiperspirant in it. But although this is still not a confirmatory study( that it causes breast cancer and Alzheimer ) , Prevention is still way better than cure. I opted out from using antiperspirants initially because it made my underarms look darker. With this added potential health risk, I’m saying “no thank you” antiperspirants.

So I recently figured out that by using store bought deodorants or antiperspirants can cause more body odor too in the long run. Since I stopped using my regular dove deodorant, I had a strong body odor! Now, I didn’t stink this bad before, but it may be due to the fact that my skin had to push out all the chemicals found in antiperspirants. I thought that just by letting my armpits sweat, the body odor would just disappear. Researching youtube for DIY hacks to remove body odor did not work(duh?). I tried the lemon rub for months, nothing. Then the baking soda and coconut oil rub, it still didn’t do anything! Then I tried the armpit detox. First expectation of the detox is that you will smell, and that is because all the toxins will be pulled out or your armpits. I am currently on the armpit detox. But sometimes I need a deodorant just to control the smell of my stinky armpits during the detox. So I purchased a natural deo from Simply Ginger; Probiotic Cream Deodorant.

Probiotic Cream Deodorant Ingredients

What you should know about Natural Deodorants is that it will make you sweat. Deodorants will mainly mask your odor but will not plug your pores giving it way for your body to release sweat. Coconut oil and shea butter makes a good moisturizer and antibacterial properties. The arrow root will absorb moisture and baking soda will neutralize odor. Vit E and probiotics (good bacteria) will help nourish your skin and fight off the bacteria causing odor to those stinky armpits and restoring the pH levels on the skin.

The deodorant comes in a plastic tub with 2 oz of product. I love the smell! I got mine in Lavender. It does not smell like coconuts or shea butter. It has minty fresh scent that explodes with lavender once applied to my armpits. And the scents lasts all day. Everytime I raise my arms to reach out stuff I could still smell the scent. It did mask my stinky pits. Thank God! I found a natural deodorant that could work. P.S If your not a fan of strong scents, this may not work for you.

I apply just a pea sized amount to each armpit then let them dry a bit before putting on my shirt. The formula melts quickly once applied to the skin. It did not stain my shirts or leave and residue behind. I will post an update on this natural deodorant journey.  So keep posted for more! I really am very pleased with the performance of this product and I’m hoping to be stinky pits free after the whole armpit detox.

Eye See tries it: Armpit Detox

After using a lot of drugstore deodorants and antiperspirants, I noticed that my body odor got worse. In my early teens, I thought using an antiperspirant was a necessity, since everyone was using it. Back then, I didn’t sweat as much and smelled that bad. Of course I had to consider my diet, and yep! Eating affects our body too. If you love spicy, junk, garlic and onion in food, like I do, studies show that your body absorbs it then release it through defecation as well as perspiration. Armpit detox releases the toxins blocked in pores causing the odor. Antiperspirants block the pores from producing sweat and that’s not good in the long run. Deodorants on the other hand, mask the odor. Most deodorants sold in the market are accompanied by antiperspirants.

Some natural ingredients are common in the armpit detox process which are bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar.

Why Bentonite Clay?

According to experts in Google, When Bentonite Clay is combined with water and left to dry on the skin as a clay mask, the clay is able to bind to bacteria and toxins living on the surface of the skin and within pores to extract these odor causing factors.

Why Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is a highly acidic ingredient that neutralizes the alkaline environment provided by sweat which in turn destroys the body odor-causing bacteria. It also prevents the formation and growth of bacteria that causes body odor. Accumulation of toxins in the body and slowed down the functioning of the liver can also be a cause of foul body odor.

The Journey to my Armpit Detox

I am currently transitioning from a chemical deodorant to a natural deodorant. There are other factors that may cause body odor such as an impending skin or health condition. This blog is in no way an “expert” recommendation. This would be my first time trying a armpit detox and I just wanted to share my unbiased thoughts. So let’s get to it.

I chose a ready-made concoction for my Armpit Detox. I am aware that the ingredients are a lot more inexpensive if purchased individually, but I personally have no patience to pick out ingredients myself. So I prefer to try this one out.

Simply Ginger’s Armpit Detox

The packaging comes in a ziplock bag and contains a powder formula. The ingredients are bentonite clay, activated charcoal and Melaleuca.

  • Melaleuca oil (Melaleuca alternifolia, or more commonly known as tea tree) has been used for centuries by cultures around the world to soothe.
  • Activated charcoal draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other micro-particles to the surface of skin, helping you to achieve a flawless complexion and fight acne. But let’s focus on the anti bacteria properties instead.
  • Bentonite clay to bind to bacteria and toxins living on the surface of the skin and within pores to extract these odor causing factors.

The instructions in the pack states that to use the armpit detox twice a month.

To make the clay:

DSC03510
1/2 tbsp of the armpit detox powder

Add in apple cider vinegar or water until a paste is formed.

Once the mixture is done, it should look something like this

Then apply the paste to armpits (must be clean and dry)  then leave the paste to air dry.

DSC03528
Apply paste to armpits, I used a fan brush to make sure a thin paste is applied so it would dry quickly.

It took 20 to 30 mins for the paste to fully dry. Once the paste it completely dries, wash off with warm water.

Warning! This may look gruesome.

After 20 mins of letting the paste dry, I waited a little bit more to make it completely dry. This was the right side.

What to expect during the process?

Excessive sweat and a release of more body odor.Although uncomfortable these are normal reactions of the body specifically the armpits. Similar to a body detox, toxins will be forced out then the body will function better. In the armpit detox, all toxins causing the odor including bacteria will we removed therefore no odor will be expected.

So it is best when performing an armpit detox, book a staycation at home.

Initial results

I took a warm shower to remove the mask. My armpits were scentless. But the next day, It smelled so bad! But that meant the detox was working. But again, the real results will take maybe a month after using this.  And here’s the thing, my skin reacted to this formula. It did itch a bit and cause some irritation some areas. The pictures below shows the red marks I got after using the clay. So I’m not sure if this is from the bentonite clay, charcoal or the Melaleuca. But I hope it’s just an initial reaction.

A patch test was needed before this procedure, just a tip. After a week, I’m giving this another go, so keep posted for an update.(I will be posting an update if this whole armpit detox thing will work)

Have you tried this armpit detox? How did it work for you? I would love to know. Thanks for stopping by! Until the next update.
